Brock Turner spent less than a year of his life as a Californian, but his impact will last long beyond his return to suburban Dayton in coming days.

After Turner's conviction and sentencing for the assault of an intoxicated, unconscious woman, California state lawmakers this week voted unanimously for a bill that will toughen penalties for sexual assaults.

The judge who sentenced Turner to six months in jail is facing a recall effort. Judge Aaron Persky also requested to no longer hear criminal cases.

Turner is scheduled for release Friday, three months early because of good behavior.

Turner is allowed to return to his parents' new residence in Greene County to serve his three-year probation.
