Dayton police see record number of firework complaints

DAYTON — Large amounts of people are buying fireworks this year due to communities canceling Independence Day celebrations because of coronavirus concerns.

Dayton police officer’s told News Center 7′s Mike Campbell that there has been an increase of 1,100 percent in complaints about fireworks being set off in neighborhoods from 2019.

Setting off fireworks in Ohio is illegal and the Dayton Police Department will be patrolling this weekend to keep the booms from rattling neighborhoods.

Even though there is a fireworks store in Jefferson Twp., consumers have 48 hours after the purchase of fireworks to take them out of state.

Snakes, sparklers and poppers are legal to use in Ohio.

“The city’s not doing it, even though we’re socially distanced, we still have to get together because we’re not seeing each other. This is a major holiday, and we’ve got to have support from our family,” said Rashad Harris of Trotwood.

The city of Dayton usually has their annual First in Flight Fireworks on July 3, but the city canceled this summer due to COVID-19 restrictions.
