On the 16th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, people around the world are gathering to remember the many lives lost as a result of the deadliest terror attack on American soil.
Here are a few local events occurring in commemoration of the historic event:

Wright-Patterson Fourth Annual “Run for the Fallen”
When: Sept. 11 at 8 a.m; the run and walk will start promptly at 8:46:30 a.m., the exact time American Airlines Flight 11 was flown into the north tower of World Trade Center 1
Where: Wright-Patterson Air Force Base at the intersection of Loop and Spaatz roads on Area B
Why go: "Run for the Fallen" pays tribute to nearly 3,000 people who died in the attacks of 9/11, keeping the promise made on that day by many to "Never Forget". The event will include moments of remembrance from 9/11 including time hacks reflecting what was happening at those precise times, volunteers offering personal reflections, etc.
Cost: The event is free and open to all Wright-Patt military and civilian employees, as well as their families.

Fairborn 9/11 Event
When: Sept. 11 at 8:30 a.m.
Where: On the front lawn of Calamityville (506 W. Xenia Dr.)
Why go: Guest speakers include Becka Perales, Director at Serco Inc. and wife of State Representative Rick Perales
Cost: Free
Trotwood Mayor Lay Wreath in Memory of 9/11
When: Sept. 11 at 12 p.m.
Where: The Government Center Courtyard (3035 Olive Road, Trotwood, OH)
Why go: Mayor Mary McDonald will be laying a wreath in memory of 9/11 and will observe a moment of silence.
Cost: Free
University of Dayton Prayer for Peace
When: Sept. 11 at 12:30 p.m; Student Government Association's event starts at 6:30 a.m.
Where: University of Dayton, Kennedy Union Field
Why go: The University of Dayton will offer prayers for peace. Additionally, the Student Government Association will honor those who died in the 9/11 attacks with 2,977 flags placed in the Kennedy Union field.
Cost: Free
Skateworld First Responders Night
When: Sept. 11 from 6 - 8 p.m.
Where: Skateworld of Kettering (1601 East David Rd. Kettering, OH 45429)
Why go: Skateworld wants to thank all of the First Responders in the community.
Cost: First Responders (Firefighters, Police, Military, EMT, Doctors, Nurses) free admission with badge; $2.00 for the general public
