Dayton house fire set after argument; arson suspect in jail

A 42-year-old Dayton man is behind bars, accused of setting a Friday afternoon house fire that sent a woman to a local hospital for treatment.

Jason Lee Schneider was arrested and booked into the Montgomery County Jail on suspicion of felonious assault, arson and a misdemeanor criminal damaging charge.

Crews were called around 1:20 p.m. to the 1300 block of Arbor Avenue after a woman reported a fire that happened after a domestic dispute, Dayton Fire Department District Chief Barry Baldwin said.

She told investigators that her boyfriend, who she identified as Schneider, threatened to kill both of them, according to a Dayton police report.

The woman suffered smoke inhalation injuries and was taken to Miami Valley Hospital.

Investigators located a gasoline can that was believed to be used as an excelerant, Baldwin said.

The fire was contained to the first floor, but the house sustained smoke damage throughout and occupants will be displaced. Damage was estimated around $20,000.

Fire crews are battling a reported house fire this afternoon on Arbor Avenue in Dayton.

Firefighters responded around 1:20 p.m. to the 1300 block of Arbor Avenue and reported a fire on the first floor of the house, according to initial reports.
