Crews were called to the 1800 block of Valley Street just before 4 a.m. Aug. 31 and found a camper fully engulfed in flames, Dayton Fire District Chief Dave Wright said. The camper was parked about 10 feet away from a vacant house and some of the fire spread to the house.

“It’s right next door. I hope our house doesn’t catch fire,” a 911 caller said to dispatch.

After the fire was extinguished, investigators found one person dead inside the camper, Wright said. The victim’s identity, as well as cause and manner of death has not been determined and are pending further investigation by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

Fire investigators are working in a parallel investigation with Dayton police and the coroner’s office to determine the victim’s cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
