Springfield home damaged after fire on Golden Gate Avenue

SPRINGFIELD — UPDATE: 5:30 PM

Fire crews worked to put out a garage that was fully involved in fire, including a car in the driveway, according to Captain Brian Wirth with the Springfield Fire Rescue Division.

Wirth confirmed that the fire extended into the main structure in the attic area, and fire crews were able to contain the fire before it spread to the house next door.

There were two people in the home at the time who self-evacuated and were able to escape without injuries.

“It appears it was accidental. It was involving a propane heater in the garage,” Wirth said.

The occupants of the home told News Center 7 that the heater started to malfunction moments before it caught fire.
