Deputies responded to the hit-and-run pedestrian crash in the 1500 block of Kimmel Lane Tuesday afternoon.

“The girl got into the car, started it up and pressed on the gas,” said Seantel McGarick, who said she’s been in a relationship with the victim for about six months.  “[She] ran her over and then ran her over again.”

The 17-year-old was transported to a local hospital, where at last check she was listed in critical condition, deputies said.

McGarick said she and the victim were walking through the neighborhood when a group of girls pulled up and got into an altercation them.

“She was just trying to get away,” McGarick said, referring to the 17-year-old.

Before the teen was run over multiple times, McGarick said she tried to intervene and stop the incident from happening.

“I tried to do my best,” she said.

According to the preliminary investigation, one of three women who were arguing behind a now closed firehouse on Kimmel Lane had a handgun.

A person who identified herself to deputies as a witness said someone involved in the altercation held a gun to her head when she tried to help the victim.

The victim took off running and made it as far as a driveway across the street before she was run over by what officials believe to be the car involved in the incident, a white Chevrolet Impala. After a search, Sheriff’s detectives located the vehicle in the 600 block of Mia Avenue late Tuesday night. The car was loaded onto a flatbed trailer for transport to the sheriff’s office impound lot.

Latoya Davis, visiting with her grandmother who lives on Kimmel Lane, said she hated to hear that a child had been run over by a car in the neighborhood she described as peaceful.

“Our sympathy goes out to the family,” Davis said.

“It makes me feel nervous to know that something like that is so close to home. I know it can happen anywhere, but that kind of sounds out of the ordinary for this neighborhood,” she said.

The incident still remains under investigation.

Detectives will work with prosecutors to file formal charges.
