The victim was only verbally ordered to get in the vehicle, and a gun was not displayed during the demand, Johns said.
After the shooting, the victim walked a short distance to a convenience store for help, but the store was closed. She sat in front of the store until a customer of the store found her around 6 a.m. and transported her to Grandview Hospital.
The woman is now listed in stable condition, Johns said.
Police do not believe the woman and the suspect have any connections to each other.
“We have our entire homicide unit investigating this right now,” Johns said. “We just can’t stand for this.”
Johns described the suspect as an older, light skinned black male, with a Afro-style haircut. The vehicle he drove away in was described as an older-model maroon SUV.
