MORAINE — A Dayton man was fatally shot Friday morning after he allegedly pointed a gun at two Moraine police officers.
The officers were investigating a report of a suspicious person in a vehicle at an apartment complex on Pinnacle Park Drive.
The person, who was later identified as Jamarco McShann, 23, pointed a gun at them and the officers opened fire, killing McShann, Moraine Police Chief Craig Richardson during a news conference Friday afternoon.

McShann was pronounced dead at the scene. The officers involved in the shooting have not been identified, however, they will be put on leave, per protocol, the chief said.
“We have an active investigation going on right now of an officer-involved shooting,” Richardson said, declining to take questions.

Richardson promised a more thorough update on the case at a later time.
“We will do a thorough, complete investigation,” he said.
Later in the day the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation arrived at the scene of the shooting and subsequently announced that they’d lead the investigation into the shooting.
"Our Special Investigations Unit was requested by Moraine to lead this investigation into what exactly occurred," spokeswoman Jill Del Greco said. "What we're going to be doing is conducting an independent investigation to determine the facts about what exactly occurred, and we'll go from there."
Between six and seven BCI agents were on scene in Moraine. BCI is not required to investigate officer-involved shootings, nor are departments required to ask for BCI's assistance, Del Greco said. But many departments ask for assistance.

At least 17 officer-involved shootings have been referred to BCI this year, she said.
BCI's investigation will focus on whether there were any criminal violations during the incident, but will not make a determination on whether the officers violated any department policies.
BCI will refer its findings to the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office at the end of its investigation, Del Greco said.

“Shots fired. Shots fired,” the officer said over police radio. “We need the medics out here.”
The Montgomery County Coroner was then called to the scene.
“I don’t know what happened, but I see the window shot out (of the car),” said Timeka Dreke, who said her son is best friends with McShann.
The coroner’s office has scheduled an autopsy to determine McShann’s official cause and manner of death.
McShann is the sibling of two other men who are known to law enforcement, according to the office of vital statistics. The two other brothers are Curtis McShann and Jamal McShann.
Jamal McShann died in a shooting in October 2013 in Dayton and Curtis McShann was sentenced earlier this month to 60 years to life in prison in connection to the Oct. 25, 2016, shooting death of Brandon Lanier, 27, on Riverside Drive in Dayton.
