Slain Springfield man’s family turns to Facebook

UPDATE @ 9:30 p.m. (Aug. 6): The June 15 slaying of James Mundy remains unsolved and now his family and police are hoping witnesses might come forward through social media.

“Facebook. Everybody’s on Facebook,” James’s mother, Prudence Mundy, told News Center 7’s Allison Wichie. “Because I know somebody saw something. And I know they might be scared. So I wanted to give them an out, a way to reach me.”

Mundy died not long after he was found near Rice and Josephine streets. He had been shot in his lower extremities.

Springfield police Officer Paula Rich, who operates and monitors the police division’s Facebook page, said many people are more comfortable sharing tips about crimes and suspects through a computer screen instead of face to face.

“And a lot of times it’s fear,” she said. “And maybe sitting at home in the safety of your home and you type in some information that the fear isn’t quite as big as coming to the police department to tell what you know. It can be intimidating.”

Rich said Facebook has helped detectives solve crimes.

Anyone who has information about Mundy’s slaying is encouraged to contact police or his family through its “Justice For James Mundy” page on Facebook.
