Help ID Newport cigarette thief, police ask

Police are looking for the Newport cigarette thief — a man they believe has stolen eight cartons and more of that brand from the same Shell gas station three times since January.

Police also believe the same suspect stole the same brand of smokes in at least one other jurisdiction, Miamisburg Detective Sgt. Jeffrey Muncy said in a statement released Tuesday night.

According to police, the thief who wears a tan windbreaker and a camouflage Army hat has committed the following crimes:

  • On Jan. 25, he took two cartons from the Shell at 11 N. Springboro Pike.
  • On May 17, he took six cartons from the same business
  • On May 29, he took an unknown number of the same brand from the same gas station.

Sgt. Muncy said that in two of the incidents, the thief did an “Army crawl” into the manager’s office, where he concealed the cartons of cigarettes.

If you can help identify the thief, described as in his mid-30s, 5 foot 6 inches to 5 foot 8 inches tall and 140 to 150 pounds, you are asked to contact Muncy at 937-847-6612.
