Crash causes natural gas pipeline leak in Shelby Co.

UPDATE @ 4:30 a.m.:

A Vectren spokeswoman says a car striking a pipeline is to blame for a large gas leak in Shelby County.

Natalie Hedde with Vectren says the vehicle hit a transmission line near the intersection of Patterson-Halpin and Fessler-Buston Roads in Shelby County. Hedde adds crews are on scene working to make the area safe, an no customers are currently without natural gas. Some customers may face some service interruptions as crews begin repairs Hedde said, but an estimate of how many could be affected is unknown.

Residents in the area have been asked to stay in place, but reports indicate at least one residence has been asked to evacuate the area.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says the driver of the vehicle involved in the single-vehicle crash has been transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries.

UPDATE @ 2:45 a.m.:

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says nearby residents have been asked to “shelter in place” while crews investigate the leak, but no residents have been asked to evacuate.

A crew from Vectren has been dispatched to the scene to investigate according to the sheriff’s office.

No illnesses or injuries have been initially reported.

Crews in Shelby County are investigating a high pressure leak from a natural gas pipeline in the area of Patterson-Halpin Road and Fessler-Buxton Road.

Some reports have indicated the leak could be a result of a vehicle crashing into the line, but crews cannot get close enough to check.
