Police: Chase suspect was high, sleep deprived

Kettering Police say a man who led them on a chase into Bellbrook admitted he had been awake for 48 straight hours and recently smoked meth.

Officers attempted to stop a vehicle that was traveling at a high rate of speed on Wilmington Avenue near Dorothy Lane in Kettering around 1 a.m. Monday according to Kettering Police Lt. Holly Murchland.

The driver, identified as Daniel Curtis Howard, 24, did not stop for officers and led police on a chase that reached speeds of 60 mph. The chase continued into Bellbrook before Howard stopped and was taken into custody outside a house in the 2300 block of South Linda Drive.

Officers from Sugarcreek and Bellbrook assisted Kettering Police in the chase. Police say speeds decreased once Howard entered Bellbrook and he even began obeying some traffic laws.

After being questioned by officers Howard admitted he recently smoked meth, and had not slept in 48 hours. Howard also told police that he stopped at the address that he believed was his father’s home. Police say they are not sure if the home is owned by anyone in relation to Howard.

Medics from Bellbrook were also dispatched to the scene after Howard claimed he was diabetic, but he was checked out and cleared.

No injuries were reported. Howard will be cited with DUI and eluding police.
