Walkaway from Clark County detention surrenders

A 15-year-old who escaped from a county juvenile detention center work detail, then fled from his father after his father located him, is in custody again after he surrendered to authorities.

He turned up at his mother’s house about 9:10 p.m., his stepfather, Adrian Sweitzer, said. He told his parents he had been at a friend’s house.

His mother took him to Springfield Regional Medical Center, where she alerted hospital security. They alerted Springfield police, who went to the hospital and took the boy into custody, a police sergeant said.

According to police, the boy left the work site and was later found by his father.

The boy later fled from his father’s vehicle near Mitchell Boulevard. The father told police the boy was supposed to be at the detention center.

Sgt. Doug Pergram said a missing persons report had been filed for the boy, whose mother tells us he is on medication.

There was no warrant issued for his capture and no serious charges pending against him, Clark County Juvenile Center Judge Joseph N. Monnin said.

“He’s not a serious risk,” Monnin said.
