House fire displaces family in Fairborn

UPDATE @ 11 p.m.:

A Fairway Drive family was displaced this evening after a fire broke out.

Neighbors reported hearing an explosion around 6:45 p.m. at the home in the 200 block of Fairway Drive, but Fairborn firefighters say it was likely the windows breaking.

When crews arrived, there was heavy fire seen on one side of the house.

The family was able to get out safely, thanks to their smoke detectors, said Fairborn Battalion Chief Patrick Ricketts.

“It’s always important to keep batteries in the smoke alarms, keep them active and check them on a regular basis, at least replacing the batteries once a year, if not twice a year,” he said.

Figid weather is a concern, and makes fighting fires difficult because water lines can freeze, the battalion chief said.

Fairborn salt trucks also had to respond to the scene because water was freezing on the roadway near the house.

FIRST REPORT

Crews were called tonight to a house fire.

Flames were heavy at the house in the 200 block of Fairway Avenue.

Initial reports indicated there may have been an explosion, but it’s not clear whether the blast happened before or during the fire.

We are on the way and will update this report as we learn details.
