Cause probed in Kettering fire that killed dog, displaced family

An investigator with the State Fire Marshal’s Office was at the house this morning in search of a cause to the fire.

UPDATE @ 10:45 p.m.

A family dog perished in a fire tonight that displaced a family of five.

Fire crews were called to a two-story home with heavy flames showing around 8:15 p.m. in the 4600 block of Walther Road.

The family was able to get out safely, but a Kettering firefighter on scene suffered an arm injury and had to be evaluated at Kettering Medical Center, Battalion Chief Jim Lokai of the Kettering Fire Department said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Lokai said the bulk of the fire was in the garage. Two cars in the garage — a Cadillac and Mercedes — were totaled, and another two cars parked at the residence sustained significant damage, the battalion chief said.

The dollar amount of damages sustained to the house also was not available tonight.

In addition to Kettering firefighters, Washington Twp. also responded to the fire.

UPDATE @ 10:20 p.m.:

A firefighter who suffered an arm injury was taken to Kettering Medical Center from the scene of a house fire.

All residents were able to get out safely in the 4600 block of Walther Road.

UPDATE @ 8:49 p.m.:

A medic was called for a firefighter tonight who was reportedly suffered a minor arm injury.

Crews were battling a fire in an attached garage reported around 8:15 p.m. that spread into a two-story house.

How the firefighter was injured, and the extent of those injuries was not immediately known.

Washington Twp. firefighters also responded to the blaze.

Heavy flames were showing tonight when crews were called to a fire at a two-story house.

A fire in an attached garage was reported just after 8:15 p.m. in the 4600 block of Walther Road.

All occupants were able to get out safely, according to initial reports.
