DAYTON — UPDATE @ 10:35 p.m.: One person was taken to a hospital suffering from a minor respiratory issue from the hazmat incident at a University of Dayton Research Institute lab, Dayton Fire District Chief Andrew Wiley said.

He said Dayton crews and the regional hazmat unit were dispatched about 6 p.m. to Curran Place, 1700 S. Patterson Blvd., at the University of Dayton, on a potential hazard in one of the labs.

Another Dayton fire official told WHIO the incident involved a chemical reaction that occurred inside a laboratory cabinet. That official and Wiley said a contractor was called to the complex to clean up the incident.

“We don’t know at this time,” Wiley said when asked if he knew what chemical was involved in the incident.

Sometime between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Dayton firefighters evacuated the facility because of the situation, which Wiley said the fire department’s primary role. He did not say how many people were evacuated.
