BROOKVILLE — Parents had to put face masks on their back-to-school lists for their children this year. News Center 7 spoke to a kindergarten teacher at Brookville Elementary School about what it is like to keep masks on the smallest students.

“It’s actually not as bad as I thought it was going to be. You see or you envision on the head or on the feet, all over the place,” said Charlotte Monroe.
Though, she said she has to consistently remind her students to put the masks back on when they take them off.
“They’re kindergarten, so we always have to remind them to sit still, be quiet, so the mask is just another step of that now,” Monroe said.
Joy Miceli, a pediatric psychologist with Dayton Children’s, said students this young do not have long enough attention spans to remember to wear their facial coverings all of the time.
“They’re focused on the moment, feeling comfortable and masks are not,” Miceli said.
She and Monroe also said this age group does not understand the severity of the situation.
“I think they know they could get sick. I think that they know that their family could get sick. They talk about that,” Monroe said.
The school gave every student a lanyard for their mask, so it does not get lost when the student takes it off.
