Unattended cooking leads to apartment building fire in Harrison Twp.

HARRISON TWP. — (UPDATE @ 10:31 p.m.): The cause of the fire at the apartment building on Heather Drive has been traced to a person who fell asleep and left food unattended on the stove, Harrison Twp. Fire Chief Mark Lynch said.

Flames and smoke heavily damaged six units on the second and third floors, displaced 10 people and caused an estimated $250,000 in damage, he said.

There were no injuries, Chief Lynch said. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced victims.

The incident was reported about 8:38 p.m., according to Montgomery County Regional Dispatch.

Lynch said fire crews arrived to find the second and third floors engulfed in flames.

A department investigator will confirm the resident’s admission about leaving the cooking unattended, the chief said, and crews will check the structure for hot spots before wrapping up their part of the incident.
