Deadly Miami Co. crash critically injures local school board member, kills her husband

UPDATE @ 12p.m. (July 2):

A deadly crash in Miami County over the weekend critically injured Northwestern Local school board member Elizabeth Hasting, 52, and killed her husband, Dan Hasting, 54.

The couple from New Carlisle were involved in a three-vehicle crash Saturday onstate Route 571 near state Route 201.

UPDATE @ 3 p.m. (July 1):

Dan Hasting, 54 of New Carlisle, died Saturday at the scene of the three-vehicle crash on sState Route 571 at state Route 201 in Bethel Twp., according to the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.

Hasting’s wife, Elizabeth Hasting, 52, was a passenger of the Honda he was driving. She is in critical condition at Miami Valley Hospital.

Hasting stopped for a striping truck on Ohio 571. A minivan then rear-ended Hasting.

The impact forced Hasting’s Honda into a pickup truck, driven by James Elkins, 42, of New Carlisle, that was headed east on Ohio 571. He was taken to Upper Valley Medical Center.

The driver of the minivan that struck the Honda was identified as Charles Robbins, 60 of Sidney. He and his passenger, Janet Robbins, 70, also of Sidney, were taken to Upper Valley Medical Center. They were later transferred to Miami Valley Hospital. Their conditions are unknown but are not life-threatening, deputies said.

Deputies confirmed the striping truck had all proper safety equipment, lights and personnel. The striping truck was not involved in the crash.

The crash is still under investigation.

UPDATE @ 7:15 p.m. (June 30):

The three-vehicle crash that occurred earlier today left one dead, Miami County Sheriff’s Lt. Todd Tennant said.

One person was flown by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital and three people were taken to Upper Valley Medical Center.

Two vehicles -- a Honda and a minivan -- were traveling west toward Tipp City, with one pickup truck traveling east. The Honda slowed down for another vehicle before the minivan struck it from behind and shoved it into eastbound traffic, causing the pickup to strike the Honda, Tennant said.

Two people were entrapped.

The driver of the Honda was killed, and the majority of the injuries are from the passenger of the Honda and the two people in the minivan.

There is no suspicion of drugs, alcohol or speed, and the crash is under investigation.

The road at State Route 571 and 201 will be shut down for several hours.

FIRST REPORT

A third medic was requested for a crash on state Route 571 at State Route 201 in Bethel Twp.

The three-vehicle accident injured five people, with at least one person possibly entrapped, Miami County dispatch confirmed.

Crews were dispatched at 5:45 p.m., and CareFlight is on the way.
