Coronavirus: Springfield teacher encourages local children to write cards for seniors

Not every gesture has to be a big one.

With children out of school and seniors left without visitors in the wake of the Coronavirus, Springfield teacher Taylor Horton asked her kindergartners to write cards to be sent to a nursing home.

“Patients with memory loss are specifically struggling right now. They don’t understand why no one is visiting them.”

Three of Horton’s students ended up creating 25 cards in less than an hour.

Not only did she have her students make cards, but posted on Facebook urging parents and teachers to encourage the same.

If you’re unsure where to send cards that your children have made, Horton suggests posting on social media, asking if anyone knows someone in the nursing home or healthcare industry.

Sometimes all it takes to make someone smile is some construction paper, scissors, and markers.

“Never underestimate the power that you have as an individual.”
