COLUMBUS — An additional 51,125 jobless claims were filed by Ohioans last week, bringing the total over the last eight weeks to over 1.1 million people, according to new data released Thursday by the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services.

The combined number from the last eight weeks is more than the combined total of those filed over the last three years.
The state has distributed over $2.4 billion in unemployment compensation to over 587,000 Ohioans, a JFS spokesperson said in a media release.
New unemployment claims were down over 16 percent in the state since last week, where the Ohio saw over 61,000 new claims. Two weeks ago, the state reported over 93,000 new claims.
The news comes at national unemployment numbers were also released, with an additional 3 million Americans seeking unemployment benefits last week, bringing the nationwide total to 36 million since the pandemic started.
