DAYTON — UPDATE: @ 4:01 a.m.
Fires crews put out an apartment fire on Grove avenue in Dayton early Sunday morning.
District Fire Chief Mike Fasnacht described how on arrival the crew found a four-unit apartment on fire from the second floor of the building.
“Crews upon arrival found a four-unit apartment building with a fire in the upper second floor. All occupants were out of the building when we arrived,” said Chief Fasnacht.
There were no injuries to the occupants or fire personal however 1 dog and 1 cat perished in the blaze.
Once the fire was out, the fire crews did a search of the building and found evidence that the fire was started on accident.
“It appears that this is of an accidental nature. Smoking materials were put into a trash can before the occupant left for the evening which caused the fire," he said.
Cheif Fasnacht also stressed the importance of discarding smoking materials safely.
“Any smoking material has their places but defiantly not in a trash can. It needs to be full extinguished in a metal container before disposing of,” he said.
The extent of the damage to the apartment building is still being investigated.
