Neighbor aids woman wounded in stabbing

Kenya Schumpert learned about the stabbing of neighbor Sherrell Wheatley when she was awakened at 4 a.m. Wednesday to hear a woman screaming and found Wheatley standing on her porch, covered in blood.

"She says he tried to stab my neck and stab me and then I went over and looked at her face and her face was cut open and her arm was split open," Schumpert said.

She used towels to put pressure on Sherrell Wheatley's wounds. The 58-year-old Wheatley begged Schumpert's brother to check on her quadriplegic son, 37-year-old Antwand Warren, who was also stabbed.

"She wanted to make sure he wasn't dead," Schumpert said. "I think we got there just in time because ... there was so much blood."

Wheatley told Dayton police officers that she and her son were attacked by her husband, 48-year-old Stanley Wheatley, inside their home in the 1200 block of Superior Avenue after he became enraged because she wouldn't give him money to buy crack. She said he used a large knife to stab her in her neck, face arms and hands.

When she ran downstairs to ask Warren to push his emergency alert button, Stanley Wheatley reportedly attacked Warren. Officers found him on the floor with a laceration on his throat.

Wheatley fled the home in a full-sized van before officers arrived. He was located at the Shell gas station in the 5200 block of Salem Avenue in Trotwood after his van crashed into several fuel pumps. The vehicle burst into flames, and rescuers pulled an unconscious Wheatley from the van and transported him to Miami Valley Hospital. Hospital staff did not release information on his condition, but police said he was in critical condition.

Sherrell Wheatley and Warren were also taken to Miami Valley. Warren underwent emergency surgery, and police said he was in serious condition. No information was released on Sherrell Wheatley's condition, but she was able to give a statement to officers about the stabbing.

According to Dayton Municipal Court records, Wheatley was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on May 27 for driving under suspension. He was released by the court Monday without having to post bond. He has a lengthy criminal history, including a conviction on a felony count of unauthorized use of a vehicle in 2013; possession of cocaine in 2007; and felonious assault with a deadly weapon in 2000. Police said they charged him with felony domestic violence after responding to a dispute involving Stanley and Sherrell Wheatley in 2011. That was his third domestic violence offense. However, a grand jury chose not to indict him on the charge, and the case was dropped, according to court records.

Sgt. Rick Blommel said the case will be presented to the prosecutor for charges, but felonious assault and domestic violence charges have already been filed against Wheatley. He is being guarded at the hospital until his release.
