New charge filed against Miami Twp. wedding venue owner

MIAMI TWP., Montgomery County — A summons filed in Miamisburg Municipal Court accuses a Miami Township property owner of unlawfully advertising and operating a bed and breakfast on Upper Miamisburg Road.

It’s not the first time Darren Powlette has faced that allegation.

In November, township officials dropped the zoning violation charge filed against him in May as his trial in the misdemeanor case was scheduled to start.

The judge agreed to drop the case so long as Powelette stops advertising Stoney Hill farm as a B&B.

This is the same property where neighbors complained about noisy wedding celebrations held at a large barn. Powlette remains in a battle with Montgomery County over that portion of the property.

In Miami Twp., officials said the property’s website now refers to the site as Stoney Hill Farm, but that it still has information about the B&B. In fact, it does mention “the farmhouse has three bedrooms and a master suite.”

“Following this court-directed compliance period, the township determined that the conditions of the agreement were not met,” according to a township statement.

The township also argues the property’s Facebook page promotes the B&B.

It lists the property’s address, and that “you can rent one bedroom for a couple’s retreat or all five for a getaway.”

Powlette could not be reached for comment.

However, in November, he said after the hearing that he was already complying with the order not to advertise or run a B&B. He and his attorney also told the court the case was fueled by angry neighbors.
