Police: Alcohol suspected in death of UD senior who died in Tenn.

UPDATE @11:25 a.m. 10/14/2014:

A preliminary autopsy report indicates that UD senior finance major Thomas J. Marshall, 21, of Western Springs, Ill., did not sustain any injuries that would have caused his death, but investigators believe alcohol was a factor.

Investigators are still waiting for a full toxicology report.

The University of Dayton community gathered in prayer this evening to mourn 21-year-old UD senior finance major Thomas J. Marshall, of Western Springs, Ill.

An estimated 350 students, faculty and staff attended the service in the Chaminade Chapel on campus.

Tennessee officials are continuing their investigation into Marshall's death on Friday. The Sevier County coroner's office said no information about Marshall's autopsy will be released until the report is finalized, which could be eight to 12 weeks.

Pittman Center Police Chief Logan Carr, in a statement released Monday, said one of his officers "responded to a rental cabin on Pinnacle Vista Road in reference to a possible cardiac arrest call."

The officer found an unresponsive male, Marshall, and performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Marshall was taken to the LeConte Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, Carr said in the statement.

Jerica Brunswick, a junior from St. Henry, said she didn't know Marshall but the entire school is grieving.

"We're a very close community," she said. "Whether you know him or not, it's something that everyone's touched by."

In a letter to the campus community sent Saturday, UD President Dan Curran said support services are available through the university's counseling center, campus ministry and residence life staff. He urged students to seek support using the resources the universityl provides or by reaching out to one another.

Brunswick said she appreciates the resources UD has offered for students.

"I think it's great they offer support for us ... and not only prayer services and religion ... but also counseling and therapy if you need that," she said.

Pittman Center Police Chief Logan Carr released a few more details about the investigation into Marshall's death.

Police and Sevier County deputies responded late Friday night to a rental cabin on Pinnacle Vista Road on a possible cardiac arrest call, according to the release.

Officers found Marshall unresponsive and perform CPR until paramedics arrived. He was transported to the LeConte Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to the release.

The investigation is ongoing by detectives with Pittman Center police and the Sevier County Sheriff's Office.

The East Tennessee Regional Forensic Center said the autopsy on Thomas J. Marshall, 21, is complete, but information will not be released for eight to 12 weeks. Marshall, a University of Dayton senior, died Friday night near Gatlinburg.

Local authorities near Gatlinburg, Tenn., are investigating the death of a 21-year-old University of Dayton student.

UD President Daniel J. Curran sent a message Saturday informing the student body of Thomas J. Marshall's death.

Marshall, a finance major from Western Springs, Ill., died Friday night and "local authorities are investigating his death," Curran's message stated.

Autopsy results at the East Tennessee Regional Forensic Center are pending and no preliminary cause of death has been released.

The Pittman Center Police Department is the agency investigating the death, according to the Sevier County Sheriff's Office.

UD has scheduled a memorial prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Chaminade Chapel on campus.
