Suspect in 2 Speedway robberies dies in Clark County Jail

SPRINGFIELD — UPDATE @ 2:40 p.m.

A suspect in two Speedway robberies was identified Saturday as the inmate found deceased in his jail cell Friday evening, Clark County Sheriff Deb Burchett said.

Brian S. Trainer, 41, of Urbana Twp. in Champaign County, died Saturday evening of an apparent suicide by hanging at the Clark County Jail, officials confirm.

“He was the inmate that robbed two Speedway stations, one in the county and one in (Springfield) on the same night,” the sheriff wrote in a text message. “He was charged with aggravated robbery.”

Trainer was accused of using a gun around 12:30 a.m. Thursday to rob Speedway at 1314 E. Main St. in Springfield, and also another Speedway in Clark County earlier that night, authorities said. He had been jailed on $20,000 bond.

He was arrested with the alleged getaway driver Brooke Clipner, 28, of Springfield, who remains in jail on $20,000 bond on suspicion of complicity.

Clark County Sheriff Deb Burchett Friday night confirmed a jail inmate was found hanging in his cell.

The man was found around 6 p.m.

The sheriff said the Clark County coroner was able to make contact with the man’s family.

His name was not released.

The incident is under investigation.
