Troopers attempt to stop impaired driver, ends with vehicle into tree

State Highway Patrol troopers tried to stop a vehicle after it went left of center around 2:19 a.m. on Park Road near state Route 49, according to a release from Wapakoneta Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Troopers turned on their lights and sirens and the 2003 blue Ford Explorer stopped at the posted stop sign at 49 and Park Road, but continued north on state Route 49.

After driving for about 2 miles, the driver of the vehicle, Magdiel A. Gaytan, 26,  went over the white line, crashed into the guardrail off of Cummins Road, went down an embankment and hit a tree.

The crash is under investigation and alcohol is a contributing factor in the crash, according to the release.

Dispatchers for Ohio State Highway Patrol said that it was possible that, due to the driver’s intoxication, he may have just not noticed state troopers.

Gaytan and passenger Cesar M. Lopez, 21, were both taken to Coldwater Hospital with minor injuries.
