Springfield man pleads guilty to using fake information on firearm sales records

A 61-year-old Springfield man accused of using fake information on 200 firearm sales records and selling the weapons on the black market pleaded guilty to charges, according to the Department of Justice South District of Ohio.

James A. Mayhugh Jr. reportedly lied in records about the who was purchasing the guns and then sold them to unknown people on the black market.

Mayhugh was the owner and operator of Jim’s Sports in Springfield.

ATF Industry Operation Investigators noticed identical firearm sales made to the same group of people being record between 2008 and 2018, according to the DOJ.

Also, certain forms that purchasers are required to fill out to buy a firearm all reportedly had Mayhugh’s handwriting.

As ATF IOIs investigated, they discovered one of the customers died in 2014, despite records indicating that the customer bought guns as recently as 2018.

Other records showed customers that bought firearms 15 or 20 years on one occasion purchasing more guns, according to the DOJ.

Mayhugh pleaded guilty to willfully violating federal requirements to provide the name, age and address of firearm purchases.

He is facing up to five years in prison.

He also agreed to give up his federal firearms license.
