UPDATE @ 7:18 p.m.: Police investigators "have several leads which are involving several different directions that this investigation could go," Capt. John Porter told reporters about Toby Lamb being identified as a person of interest in the slaying of Carl Talley on Monday.
Lamb was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on Thursday on a charge of driving under suspension, according to jail records. He was arrested the same day by deputies in Harrison Twp. and later released that same day after 10 percent of his $1,500 bail was paid.
Trotwood police contacted the sheriff’s office about Lamb prior to deputies arresting him, according to Sheriff Phil Plummer.
Connie Talley said Lamb and her husband had recently argued about money. The two were childhood friends and Mrs. Talley said her husband had helped Lamb after he was released from prison last year. Lamb is on parole after having served six months for attempted drug trafficking and drug possession.
Carl Talley, an auto mechanic, would have turned 34 on Tuesday. Instead, his funeral is set for Tuesday at Harris Memorial CME Church, 3950 Haney Road. Visitation starts at 11 a.m. followed by the service at noon.
UPDATE @ 1:45 p.m. (July 24):
Trotwood police investigators have a person of interest in the homicide investigation of Carl Talley, Capt. John Porter said during a news conference.
The person, who Porter stressed is not a suspect, is Toby Lamb. Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies arrested him Thursday for reportedly driving on a license violation and booked him into jail.
Lamb isconsidered a person of interest because of information investigators received from Talley’s family concerning a previous encounter between the two men, Porter said, noting that officers have not questioned Lamb about the slaying.
Lamb posted bail and has been released. Porter said there are no plans at the moment to charge him in Talley’s slaying.
Talley’s death is Trotwood’s second homicide this year.

UPDATE@6:18 p.m.
A neighbor spotted the body of a 33-year-old man at the foot of his own driveway after he was gunned down early Monday morning.
Trotwood police said Carl L. Talley was working on a car around 9 a.m. when someone shot him at least once. A neighbor saw him lying in his driveway in a pool of blood and called 911. The unnamed neighbor told dispatchers she may have heard the shots about 10 minutes before discovering the body, but thought the noise was just the sound of a lawn mower backfiring.
Talley was pronounced dead at the scene.
There were no actual witnesses to the shooting, though detectives canvassed the area and spoke with neighbors who said the shooting suspects may have fled in a vehicle. Neither Talley’s wife or children were home at the time of the shooting, police said. Many family members arrived on-scene after the shooting and were visibly distraught, and at times had to be restrained by officers.
Investigators are unsure of what may have prompted this shooting. Capt. John Porter said friends and family members have been cooperative with detectives so far in their investigation.
“We have several leads that we’re following up on, some names we received from some of the friends and family members who arrived on scene but nothing solid yet,” Porter said.
Talley does have a misdemeanor crime history with Trotwood police, including some minor drug convictions.
