5 Vandalia students suspended for sexting

Five Morton Middle School students have been suspended and could face expulsion following an investigation into inappropriate photographs texting to students, posted on social media and shown at school, according to officials.

According to the district, administrators were alerted to the situation on Jan. 6 and immediately began an investigation.

A female eighth grade student is accused of sending inappropriate photographs to a seventh and eighth grade male student, the district said in a prepared statement.

The male students reportedly posted the photos on social media and texted them to other students.

Two other males students are also accused of sharing the photos, the district said.

“This incident should remind all students that poor choices can have very serious consequences. Beyond the school discipline, the individuals involved may face criminal charges for these acts; acts that they have been repeatedly cautioned against by our staff and additional programming that provided specifically to address the inappropriate use of social media. There is no excuse for these behaviors and they will not be tolerated in our schools,” Vandalia-Butler City Schools Superintendent Brad Neavin said.

Vandalia police were also notified of the incident and are investigating, the district said.
