Chase involving multiple police agencies ends with 1 in custody

SHELBY COUNTY — One person is in the Allen County Jail after leading multiple police agencies on a chase Monday evening.

Joseph T. Landers, 36, of Cincinnati, initially led Lima Police on a chase after they responded to an incident involving Landers. Lima Police later ended the pursuit and reached out to the Ohio State Patrol (OSP) at 7:45 p.m. for their help, an OSP spokesperson told News Center 7.

An OSP trooper saw Landers vehicle near mile marker 113 on southbound I-75, where they tried to pull Landers over again, at which time another chase began.

“Stop sticks were deployed multiple times, but unsuccessful. The suspect vehicle attempted to avoid stop sticks near mile post 92 and lost control, traveling off the left side of the roadway striking the median cable barrier,” an OSP spokesperson said.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, along with the Anna Police Department, assisted OSP in the chase.

Landers went off the highway to avoid spike strips a Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputy deployed, returned onto the highway, and later crashed into a cable barrier around Michigan Street exit on 1-75.

After crashing, police officers ordered Landers to exit his car, and after several attempts, he did; however, he led responding police agencies on a short foot chase in the median of the highway. An Anna police officer tasered and tackled Landers, and a Miami County Sheriff’s Deputy placed cuffs on him. Once officers had Landers in custody, he was searched, and it was found he was wearing a bulletproof vest. Landers was not injured as a result of the crash and refused medical treatment at the scene.

OSP later transported Landers to the Lima Police Department, where he was later booked into the Allen County Jail.
