Lexington Avenue standoff linked to 2 shootings, including one involving police ends, suspect not at residence

DAYTON — A standoff on Lexington Avenue that started early Thursday afternoon has ended. The standoff involved the 17-year-old police believe shot another 17-year-old on Kumler Avenue Wednesday, which then led detectives to a porch, where an officer-involved shooting happened, Dayton’s Assistant Police Chief Matt Carper said.

The first shooting Wednesday sent a 17-year-old to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after they were shot in the area of Catalpa Drive, Yale Avenue, and Kumler Avenue around noon Wednesday, Carper previously told News Center 7. That teen is now in stable condition, Carper said.

Detectives were following up on witness reports that suspects in the first shooting were at a home in the 100 block of Lexington Avenue around 1:45 p.m. The two detectives found six people on the porch of the home, one of which matched the description of the suspected shooter from the earlier incident, Carper said.

As Dayton detectives exited an unmarked police cruiser in identifiable police gear, they heard a gunshot and saw a flash from a gun, Carper said.

The two detectives, identified as Det. Matthew Gray and Det. Angela Woody, fired in self defense, Carper said. Gray fired three shots and Woody fired one, the assistant chief said.

The person shot by detectives was hit in the legs. He was identified as Jarius Wood, 32, and he was taken to an area hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening, Carper said.

Woody and Gray were placed on administrative leave pending the criminal and internal investigation, Carper said.

A new police investigation was underway on Lexington Avenue Thursday near the site of Wednesday’s officer-involved shooting. SWAT units were on scene, according to our crew.

Carper said police responded to Lexington Avenue again Thursday searching for Jayden Dewberry, who is the suspect believed to have shot the 17-year-old on Kumler Avenue earlier Wednesday.

After hours on scene, the standoff ended and it was confirmed that Dewberry was not at the residence on Lexington Avenue. The investigation has been turned over to detectives.

The series of events is believed to involve at least two groups of people involved in multiple felonious assault crimes in recent weeks in the city, including a homicide.

Carper said those groups have been involved in crimes that are believed to involve revenge for previous incidents.

Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl said the city has an increased concern for violent assaults in the city involving juveniles. He while violent assault numbers have not increased, the percentage involving juveniles has. He said the department also has seen a “significant increase in these crimes in West Dayton and almost exclusively so.”
