The incident began as an attempted traffic stop in the area of Harshmanville Road and Pepper Drive after officers spotted a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in a residential area, a Huber Heights police spokesperson said in a media release Thursday morning.
A police cruiser, occupied by two Huber Heights officers, chased the vehicle as the pursuit continued onto Needmore Road from Old Troy Pike, the spokesperson said.
Speeds in the pursuit reached over 100 mph in the chase as the pursuit continued onto Needmore Road near Wagner Ford Road. The Huber Heights officer driving, who was not identified, lost control of the cruiser after hitting the concrete median. The cruiser then went across the centerline and hit another vehicle, not involved in the pursuit, head-on, police said.
“Bad crash. Bad crash, Wagner and Needmore,” officers said in emergency scanner traffic.
Moments before the officers reported the crash, a separate police officer told the officers involved in the pursuit to discontinue the chase, emergency scanner traffic indicates.
Both Huber Heights officers and the woman driving the other vehicle were injured in the crash but suffered injuries described as minor, police said.
The vehicle being pursued continued and fled the area and the suspect has not been located.
Huber Heights detectives are investigating the criminal portion of this incident involving the pursuit and are following up on several leads, the spokesperson said.
The crash involving the police cruiser and third vehicle is under investigation by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
