WARREN COUNTY — A Dayton man who is accused of stealing two cars, including one vehicle that had two kids inside, during a lengthy pursuit Saturday has been taken into custody, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
FIRST REPORT: Dayton man accused of kidnapping, double carjacking, leads state troopers on pursuit through multiple cities
Bryon Finklea Jr., 24, was located in Dayton Tuesday morning and was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on unrelated charges, Lt. Chuck O’Bryon of the Lebanon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said in a media release Wednesday. He was located and arrested by the U.S. Marshal Service SOFAST task force at a home in the 4000 block of Redonda Lane, a spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals said in a media release.
Finklea has been charged with kidnapping, robbery, and fleeing and eluding, and will be arraigned on the charges in Franklin Municipal Court after he faces a judge in Montgomery County on the unrelated charges, O’Bryon said.
Finklea was the driver accused in a multiple county, high-speed pursuit that began initially as an attempted traffic stop, state troopers said. OSHP aviation units were monitoring for speed violations on I-75 Saturday around 11:30 a.m. when they recorded a Kia SUV, allegedly driven by Finklea, traveling 100 mph south on I-75. State troopers on the ground attempted to stop the vehicle and initiated a pursuit after it failed to stop, O’Bryon said.
As the pursuit continued onto state Route 63, the Kia SUV stopped in the Kroger parking lot and allowed a woman who was a passenger inside the get out of the vehicle. That woman was taken into custody, however it was not indicated if she was facing any charges.
The pursuit continued east on state Route 63 when the Kia SVU Finklea was allegedly driving came to a stop and became disabled near the entrance to Trader’s World. Finklea then got out of the Kia he was in and carjacked a Chevrolet car, driven by a Lebanon man, that had his two children in the back seat, state troopers said.
The pursuit continued into Lebanon where Finklea stopped the car at the intersection of U.S. 42 and state Route 63, investigators said. One of the children inside got out of the car and was secured by police. However as law enforcement units approached the car, it took off again with the other child still inside, according to state troopers.
Later in the pursuit the second child was let out of the vehicle in Mason.
As the pursuit continued into West Chester, the Chevrolet car Finklea was driving was involved in a crash on Tylersville Road at Dudley Drive. After the crash, state troopers said Finklea got out of the stolen Chevrolet car and then carjacked another vehicle, a Ford SUV, that was driven by a 16-year-old from Franklin.
Finklea then drove the stolen SUV onto I-75 heading north as state troopers continued to pursuit him, O’Bryon said. After the vehicle exited from I-75 the pursuit was cancelled due to traffic conditions and excessive speed.
The stolen Ford SUV was later located in Dayton.
