DAYTON — Two Dayton police detectives, investigating a shooting from earlier in the day, shot a person who pointed a gun at them on Lexington Avenue Wednesday afternoon, Dayton Assistant Police Chief Matt Carper said.

Detectives were investigating witness reports that a suspect from an earlier shooting on Catalpa Drive near Yale Avenue had ran to a house in the 100 block of Lexington Avenue, Carper said.

Detectives found four people on the porch of the house, including one person who matched the description of the suspect who ran from the shooting earlier in the day. Around 1:45 p.m., one of those people on the porch raised a gun towards officers and was shot by both detectives, Carper said.

“Detectives gave him multiple orders to drop the firearm. The subject did not comply, and the detectives fired multiple rounds and hit the subject in both legs,” Carper told News Center 7.

The person shot by police, who was not identified, was transported to an area hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening.

Both detectives, who have not been identified, have been placed on administrative leave, according to department policy. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office will investigate the criminal portion of the shooting while the administrative investigation is handled by the department’s Professional Standards Bureau.

The first shooting, at Catalpa and Yale, happened just after noon and sent a 17-year-old to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, Carper said.

Police would not say if any arrests have been made stemming from either investigation, however investigators are interviewing witnesses and are working to determine the roles in the first shooting.

Multiple guns were recovered at the house on Lexington Avenue during the investigation after the police-involved shooting, Carper said.

It was not immediately known if either detective was wearing body-worn cameras when the shooting happened. Carper said investigators are working to determine that and will release the footage when its available.

Additional details are expected to be released Thursday.
