Deputies were first called to the Park National Bank at 1600 Moorefield Road in Moorefield Twp. around 11:45 a.m. on reports of a bank robbery at the branch.

Shortly after the robbery, deputies reported they were in pursuit of a vehicle that was suspected to have the bank robber inside. The pursuit ended after the car crashed into a guardrail and briefly caught fire on Hillside Avenue near North Burnett Road just before noon, deputies said.

The suspected bank robber, later identified by deputies as Dustin N. Midkiff, 40, of Springfield was taken into custody after the crash. Midkiff was taken to an area hospital for treatment of a minor hand injury in the crash, deputies said.

Midkiff is facing charges of robbery, fleeing and eluding and obstructing official business, deputies said in a media release Wednesday afternoon. Midkiff is also being held in the Clark County Jail on an active warrant for his arrest from Athens, Ohio on charges of felonious assault, grant theft, and domestic violence.

The crash on Hillside Avenue is also believed to have caused a nearby water main to rupture, deputies said. The force of the impact into the guardrail was believed to have caused enough shaking that the water line ruptured and sent water pouring into the street.

Road crews were called to the scene to repair the damaged guardrail and broken water main.

This is the second bank robbery reported in the last two days in the Springfield area. Springfield police investigated a robbery at the Wright Patt Credit Union on North Bechtle Road around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

According to a Springfield police report, a robber made off with cash and told employees he had a gun. No arrests were made in that robbery investigation.

It was not known if the two robberies are believed to be connected.

Additional details were not released. We’ll continue to update this story as we learn more.
