KETTERING — Two people arrested during a SWAT situation at an apartment complex on Hazel Avenue had previous criminal convictions and one of them had a warrant for her arrest, according to jail and court records.

Police arrested Matthew Fowler, 41, and Mindy Sturgell, 37, on Hazel Avenue around 9:20 a.m. Wednesday.

SWAT officers surrounded the complex in the area of Hazel and Scottsdale Drive around 8:30 a.m. after getting a search warrant for the apartment, said Kettering Officer Joe Ferrell. Ferrell said they called Dayton SWAT for assistance, because they believed there may have been weapons inside the residence.

Fowler was previously involved with Kettering Police in 2018, when he fought with officers at the McDonald’s on Wilmington Pike and prompted police to issue an urgent call for extra officers to respond. He ended up being convicted on felony charges in the case and served 10 months in jail, according to online records.

Sturgell has a warrant out for her arrest after she failed to check in with her probation officer after she was previously convicted for obstructing official business in 2018. She also was wanted for failing to appear in court on a misdemeanor charge out of Riverside.

Fowler is currently being held on suspicion of a weapons charge.

Kettering Police have not said what, if anything, they found inside the apartment once they went inside.
