Woman, child found dead inside Dayton home; Police investigating as double homicide

DAYTON — UPDATE: 11 p.m.

The Morgan County Coroner’s Office in Alabama confirmed with News Center 7 Thursday night that a man from Dayton died by suicide in Falkville, Alabama.

We are working to confirm if this is the same man Dayton police have been looking for in the murder of a woman and child in Dayton.

Officers got called to a home on Burleigh Avenue around noon Thursday.

Dispatch records showed a 911 caller asked officers to check on a person who lives there.

The person’s name News Center 7 got from the Alabama coroner matches the name the 911 caller gave today.

We will continue updating this story as we learn more.

Officers were first requested to the home in the 300 block of Burleigh Avenue around 11:45 a.m. Thursday after receiving a call from a woman asking for police to check on a person who lives in the home, dispatch records indicate.

“I need somebody to come do a wellness check. My son dropped my granddaughter off last night, and I just came over here and he’s not here. My granddaughter said they were fighting,” a caller said in a 911 call, obtained in a News Center 7 public records request.

A dispatcher asked the caller if “you think something happened?”

“I’m not sure. I just opened the door and just screamed everyone’s names and no one’s answering,” the caller said.

When police entered the home the found the woman and child both dead and launched a homicide investigation, Dayton police Major Jason Hall told News Center 7.

“At that time, it was obvious that a crime had been committed,” Hall said. “We believe a firearm was involved.”

The identities of those killed were not released pending notification of family and further investigation by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office. Hall said the girl was older than 2-years-old, but younger than a teenager.

Hall added the investigation is in its early stages and additional details were not available for release.
