Hyundai owners should consider parking outside; New recall for safety defect due to fire risk

Owners of Hyundai vehicles may want to consider parking their cars outside or away from their homes and other structures until they are repaired, according to a spokesperson for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Hyundai Motor America has issued a new recall on the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe due to a fire risk caused by a malfunction in the anti-lock brake system, the spokesperson said in a media release. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on December 26.

The 2016-2018 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles were recalled earlier this year for the same safety issue, the spokesperson said. When the anti-lock brake system malfunctions it could cause an electrical short resulting in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.

Hyundai dealers will replace the brake system multi-fuse for free, the spokesperson said. Owners can contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460.

Owners can enter their 17-digit vehicle identification number to check if their vehicle is under recall on the NHTSA website.

NHTSA’s SaferCar app will send a notification to your phone if a new recall is issued, the spokesperson said. Owners just need to download the app and enter the vehicle, tires, car seat or other vehicle equipment.

So far this safety defect has caused four fires in the United States but no injuries were reported, the spokesperson said.
