1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime; Ways you can lessen your risk

One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society.

The cancer society estimates that this year close to 300,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.

Breast cancer also impacts men. More than 2,500 new cases will be diagnosed in men and about 530 will die from it, according to the cancer society.

The Pink Ribbon Girls in Clayton are a nonprofit that work year round to help those diagnosed with breast cancer.

The nonprofit founded in 2002, has five locations around the United States with three being in Ohio.

For every single woman impacted by breast cancer or gynecological cancer the organization provides healthy meals delivered to their doorstep, house cleaning kits, peer support, events and more.

Since being founded the organization has been able to provide more than 530,000 meals, 2,500 rides and 9,000 house cleaning services.

In 2020, the organization collected more than $4 million through donations and sponsorships to continue their work.

The cancer society recommends ways people can reduce their risk of developing breast cancer:

• Drinking less alcohol
• Working out
• Breastfeeding when you have children
• Limiting taking birth control

The cancer society said it’s also important for people to be getting screened regularly as well as doing at home examinations.
