CLARK COUNTY — A murder investigation is underway after a shooting in Clark County Sunday night, according to Clark County Sheriff’s Detective Lieutenant Kristopher Shultz.

At approximately 9:18 p.m., Clark County Sheriff’s deputies and medics responded to reports of a shooting at 204 Slayton Street in Park Layne.

When officers arrived on scene they found bystanders helping a man suffering from a single gunshot wound, Shultz said.

Joseph Burley Edwards, 48, of New Carlisle has been identified as the victim.

Medics transported Edwards to a local hospital, but he later died from his injuries, Shultz said.

On scene, deputies located Glen James Sexton, 24, of New Carlisle, inside a car parked on the driveway with his hands up.

Sexton and a female passenger were taken to the sheriff’s office for questioning, Shultz said.

Deputies learned that Sexton came to the Slayton address to meet with the victim.

Edwards and Sexton got into a “heated confrontation,” Shultz said.

Sexton got a firearm from the car, and Edwards punched him in the “face area.” Sexton then shot at Edwards, according to Shultz.

Sexton was arrested and charged with one count of murder. He is being held in the Clark County Jail, Shultz said.

Deputies obtained a search warrant for the residence and surrounding property. While searching for evidence they found Douglas Davadis Searcy II, 45, hiding inside.

He was arrested on an unrelated felony warrant for possession of drugs. Searcy is not part of the homicide investigation, Shultz said.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) Crime Scene Unit was contacted and arrived to help with evidence collection, Shultz said.
