1 killed in multi-vehicle crash in Mercer County

MERCER COUNTY — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash involving three vehicles that happened Monday morning in Mercer County.

According to a release from OSHP, the crash happened on US 127 south of Shindeldecker Road at approximately 8:48 a.m.

OSHP says the preliminary investigation shows that Joseph M. McCavitt, 38, of Elkhart, Indiana was driving southbound on US 127 when he drove left of center and struck a commercial tractor trailer driving northbound.

The tractor trailer was being driven by Billy K. Bowman, 62, of Vandalia.

McCavitt’s vehicle then struck a Chevrolet van head on, according to OSHP. The van was being driven by Jared So. Powers, 22 of Miamisburg.

McCavitt suffered serious injuries and was taken by Lutheran air to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana, according to OSHP. Amber j. McCavitt, 39, was the front seat passenger and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Three children were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Powers suffered serious injuries and was taken to the an area hospital.

Boman was not injured.

OSHP says alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash. Next of kin has been notified.

The crash remains under investigation.
