14-year-old killed in Columbus apartment shooting

COLUMBUS — A 14-year-old child was shot and killed, then discovered in an east Columbus apartment complex Saturday overnight.

Columbus Police responded to an apartment complex at Eden Crossing, called The Villages, shortly after 12:30 a.m. on reports of a shooting, a spokesperson for the department wrote in a news release on their website.

When officers arrived, they discovered a boy had been shot, prompting medical units to transport him to Mount Carmel East. The boy suffered from life-threatening conditions.

At the hospital, and after treatment, the boy was pronounced dead at 1:16 a.m., about 45 minutes from when officers responded to the emergency call.

Lorenzo Butler, Jr. was identified as the deceased child following the investigation.

The investigation also yielded the possible murder weapon—a gun recovered from the crime scene.

It is currently unknown if detectives were able to identify the suspect at the time of reporting.

The Columbus Police Department led the ongoing investigation into the shooting.
