When they got to the scene, they found a 16-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the chest, Maj. Brian Johns confirmed.

The teen was taken to a local hospital where he died. News Center 7 is working to learn his identity.

“My daughter, she came to me, like, ‘Mom there’s police officers outside’ and come to find out that someone had been shot,” Alisha Williamson said.

Williamson said they were terrified wondering exactly what took place. News of the shooting death hit hard.

“So that really hurts my heart. Just knowing, because I was a teacher for 13 years so I have a passion for children,” Williamson said.

An initial investigation showed that the victim showed up at the home with a semi-automatic handgun.

He and three other minors were passing the gun around to take photos and videos for social media when one of them pointed the gun and accidentally fired a shot, hitting the victim.

“It’s an issue that we continue to have, as far as youth having firearms with no adults around, so it’s another issue. Sadly, this actually resulted in somebody’s death,” Johns said.

“Just to know that they were passing a gun around and the gun went off accidentally, that’s crazy,” Williamson said.

She told News Center 7 that she can’t imagine the nightmare this is for everyone involved.

“It hurts my heart, I’m sad for the child, I’m sad for the parents and the only thing I can do is pray, ask the Lord to watch over the family because they’ve lost their child,” Williamson said.

The Dayton Police Department Homicide Unit is investigating this shooting.

Police will gather all their information and then have the county prosecutor’s review to see if any charges are appropriate.
