On Wednesday, two Americans were found dead in the resort of Los Cabos, residing in the popular tourist town of Cabo San Lucas.

Medics received a report Tuesday that the Americans were unconscious in their room, a spokesperson for the local police stated, according to CBS News.

When medics arrived, they found the two victims dead. The suspected cause of death was inhalation of gas.

Several cases of death by carbon monoxide poisoning occurred in the county of Mexico in recent years. American tourists were oftentimes found deceased after improperly vented or leaky water heaters and stoves filled closed spaces with the deadly gas.

Abby Lutz and John Heathco were identified as the victims.

“Abby had an adventurous spirit and a wonderfully kind heart. She loved to travel, see new places, and share her zeal for life with those around her,” her family said in a statement.

“Abby and her boyfriend thought they had food poisoning and went to the hospital to get treatment,” her family said.

The couple said they were feeling much better. A few days later, however, the family received a call saying that Lutz and her boyfriend had died in their sleep.

Prosecutors in Mexico’s Baja California Sur state said Thursday that autopsies suggested Lutz and Heathco died of “intoxication by an undetermined substance.”

The state prosecutors’ office said the bodies bore no signs of violence. The office did not say what further steps were being taken to determine the exact cause of death.

They were reportedly dead for 11 or 12 hours before medics found their bodies.
