2 boys slash, hospitalize Ohio officer with screwdriver while trying to steal his car

CLEVELAND — Two suspects reportedly attacked an off-duty officer in the head with a screwdriver while attempting to steal his car in northeast Ohio.

Cleveland Police were dispatched to West 123rd Street at around 4 p.m. on Sunday after an off-duty police officer was attacked while robbers attempted to steal his car, Sergeant Jennifer Ciaccia with the city’s police department told 19 News.

A preliminary investigation found that two boys/men between 16 to 20 years old attempted to take the officer’s car. As the off-duty officer struggled to relinquish his property to the robbers, he was reportedly attacked with a screwdriver.

The thieves allegedly slashed the officer in the head with a screwdriver, prompting a medical team to respond with the other first responders. Medics then transported him to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

The officer was in stable condition following the attack.

The two suspects were unable to take the desired vehicle, which was described as a Kia Sorento.

No suspects were in custody or arrested at the time of reporting.

Cleveland Police led the investigation into the attack.
