Teen charged in Kettering bowling alley shooting to stay in juvenile detention

KETTERING — Two teens were treated and released from the hospital after a shooting happened inside Woodman Lanes on Woodman Drive Saturday morning.

“One gunshot was fired inside of Woodman Lanes which struck two males,” said Kettering Officer Tyler Johnson. “It is unclear at this time how the incident started and why the initial altercation occurred.”

Johnson said officers responded to the bowling alley just after midnight Saturday.

“There was gunshots inside Woodman Lanes bowling alley,” a 911 caller said, adding that she only heard one shot. “We ran out. Everyone ran out.”

The caller said she thought the shooting happened near a group of teenagers in the bowling alley.

“There were several groups of 15-18 year olds inside the bowling alley at the time of the shooting and it is under investigation whether or not the incident was a result from groups having conflict of just the individuals involved,” Johnson said.

Police ended up arresting a 17-year-old male in connection to the shooting. He was taken to the Montgomery County Juvenile Justice Center.

The 17-year-old was charged with two counts of felonious assault and two weapons charges. He appeared in court on Saturday, where a judge entered denials for each of the charges. He also was ordered to stay in juvenile detention.

As part of the nearly 8-hour investigation at the bowling alley, police talked to at least 10 different witnesses about the gunfire, according to an incident report.

A woman who lives across the bowling alley said things like this just don’t happen in her neighborhood.

“It’s nice, quiet, everybody’s good, get along, they keep up around here,” Sherri Jarvis told News Center 7′s Brandon Lewis.

The teen charged for the shooting is scheduled back in court on April 28 at 10 a.m. for a preliminary conference.
