A water main break on West Xenia Wednesday has closed down the road. Since the break, residents have had issues with their water.
Another water main broke a road over on East Xenia, only adding to the problem.
“We discovered them when we started plowing the snow off of it, the water was coming up out of the street,” Jamestown Road Superintendent Gordon Sargent said.
Sargent said the water leaking from the pipes was draining the water tower.
West Xenia Street was placed on a boil water advisory Thursday.
“We were trying to cut back on their usage on the water until we got the tower to start building back up,” Jamestown Mayor Johnathan Crosswhite said.
Sargent says they are working on fixing the leaks, but the pipes are creating new problems.
“They’re in the process of putting a band around it, and then they’ll tighten that band to where it seals the leak off,” Sargent said. “This town has a lot of old pipes and they’re brittle. When the ground moves, they move.”
Sargent says the constant changes in temperature may be what caused the break, and the old pipes are struggling to handle it.
“Our biggest problem is the valves are old and we can’t get the water pressure shut down enough to do it,” Sargent said.
Crosswhite reminds Jamestown residents to stay patient.
“Give them room to get the job done so we can get it taken care of and work with us,” Crosswhite said.
Repair crews aren’t sure how long it will take before the problem is fixed, but they will be out at the sites for the next few days.
