He was flown to a hospital in Dayton, where he later died.

Greenville police arrested Matthew McKnight, 48, after he went after a guest of another tenant.

Neighbors described this incident as a nightmare, because of a simple request for a cigarette.

“I didn’t have any, so he went next door and that guy just took some kind of Samurai sword and stabbed him,” Greenville resident Sheila Horne said.

Horne said Brown was homeless and she would spend time with him.

“I’d let him sit with me in the daytime, so he didn’t have to walk around the streets all day, you know because he lived at the bridge,” Horne said.

Greenville Police Chief Ryan Benge said his officers handled the crime scene.

“I know that the two did know each other. I’m not going to comment yet on past disagreements or what may have led up to it,” Benge said.

Benge didn’t want to say much else but neighbors claim McKnight appeared to have mental challenges.

“He pulled a knife on me before because I went over to ask for a cigarette, and I had to run. But he was very mentally ill and he’d sit up all through the night and yell and scream,” Horne said.

Horne and other neighbors want McKnight to stay locked up for his, and the community’s safety.

“I’ve seen so much violence, it’s the way this world is anymore,” Greenville resident Jerry Huffine said.

“I hope he doesn’t ever get out because if he does, I don’t know what I’ll do,” Horne said.

Greenville detectives are looking into records to see how long McKnight has lived at the complex and if there were any other complaints about his behavior.

McKnight is booked into the Darke County Jail on suspicion of murder.
